LADOT Announces Free Holiday Late Night DASH Route in Downtown
November 21, 2008 – January 1, 2009
Los Angeles (Nov. 20, 2008)—The City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) will begin operating a night time DASH bus route to serve Downtown Los Angeles during the 2008 holiday period starting Friday, November 21, 2008. The new Late Night DASH route will serve riders on Friday and Saturday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. from November 21 through and including New Year’s Eve, which falls on a Wednesday night. The special holiday Late Night DASH service also offers riders the ability to connect to Metro’s Red Line which is also operating late night holiday hours until 3:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
Rita L. Robinson, LADOT’s General Manager, said that the Late Night DASH route was the direct result of a private/public partnership with Downtown merchants and individuals, who raised the money for LADOT to operate the service. “This partnership benefits everyone living, working or visiting Downtown Los Angeles during the busy holiday season. Having public transportation available late into the night will allow activities to flourish in Downtown,” she stated.
District 2 Councilwoman Wendy Greuel, Chair of the City Transportation Committee stated: “With our struggling economy and budget deficit, it has been harder to fund transportation alternatives and so we’ve asked the businesses to step up to the plate, and they did. The Late-Night Downtown DASH program is a unique private-public partnership between downtown businesses, entertainment venues and the City that promotes public transportation and showcases the City’s vibrant night-life.”
"The Late Night Downtown DASH makes good sense. Free, reliable public transportation, well into the night during the busy holiday season will support downtowners, visitors, and businesses alike, connecting them with the plethora of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues throughout our city center" said District 9 Councilwoman Jan Perry.
Using the 7th. St. Metro Center Station as a hub, the Late Night DASH will serve the Convention Center and LA Live to the south, the Historic Core to the east and the and Music Center to the north. Riders can visit Downtown's wide variety of restaurants, bars and clubs using stops all along the new DASH route.
Partnership sponsors include 213 Inc.: Broadway Bar, Casey’s Irish Bar & Grill, Cole’s Original French Dip, Golden Gopher, Seven Grand; The Association; Astani Enterprises; Barry Shy; blogdowntown.com; Brookfield Properties; City Loft Square; Historic Downtown BID; J Restaurant and Lounge; LA Live; Los Angeles City Councilwomen Wendy Greuel and Jan Perry; Los Angeles Theatre; MerueloMaddux; Music Center, Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County; Pacific Electric Lofts; Patina Restaurant Group; Pete’s Café; and Pitfire Pizza Company.
